Description:

Climate change has been characterized as one of the defining economic, environmental, and social issues of our time. Climate change, while not readily categorized as a legal phenomenon, has captured our attention through both risk and opportunity, as they pertain to the field of business, human rights, and the environment. Our panelists will discuss this nexus through the legal concept of fiduciary duty, disclosure, and the strategic imperative of responsible investing. By providing some concrete legal analysis about the governance issues surrounding climate change, we can probe further into the information required in reporting to make informed choices about investment decisions. Pension funds offer a unique case study of the progress being made in Canada. The breadth of our panel will provide a global perspective on responsible investing, as well as offer insight into the advocacy and activism by shareholders and millennials through non-legal channels.

Climate change issues impact us differentially. By developing our literacy on the issue and exchanging ideas through interdisciplinary platforms we will be more prepared as lawyers and professionals to engage meaningfully with our clients and our futures. The seminar style panel will be followed by a facilitated small-group discussion.
